Signal Tower
The two towers, which are called Clock and Signal, rise above the three-storied central façade at a height of about 34 metres. One of them carries a chiming clock installed on it back in the time of Count Orlov, the palace’s first owner.
The other tower served as a viewing platform for ladies and gentlemen “to take in the surroundings”. It acquired its present name from the aerial telegraph installed in the tower in the reign of the Emperor Nicolas I.
These days it is also possible to get to the top of the Signal Tower by climbing up 191 steps of a granite spiral staircase. It offers a spectacular view of the parks, the town of Gatchina and the adjacent area.
